More than 11,000 attorneys across the United States have signed and sent a letter opposing the appointment of far-right commentator and former Breitbart executive Stephen Bannon to President-Elect Donald Trump’s administration. The letter accuses Mr Bannon of complicity with and even promotion of white supremacy and anti-Semitism, citing past commentary which the lawyers argue shows a contempt for institutions of American democracy and government.

‘Mr Bannon has demonstrated his opposition to the stable, democratic form of government that our profession embraces and strives to maintain… The white supremacy and political insurgency that Mr Bannon has embraced and amplified contradicts everything we stand for as attorneys and as Americans,’ reads the letter. The letter is to be circulated to all current and incoming members of the US Congress, calling on them to take ‘all possible measures’ to reverse Mr Trump’s decision on the appointment.
