A new billion dollar firm is born

UK firm SJ Berwin is to tie the knot with Asian Pacific firm King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) on 1 November 2013 creating a $1 billion plus law firm.

The UK partners voted in favour of the merger which will create one of the top 25 law firms in the world in terms of revenue. The move will create the first merger between a top UK and Asia Pacific law firm and will bring together businesses in China, Hong Kong and Australia. KWM chairman Wang Junfeng will head the combined firm as global chairman with SJ Berwin’s senior partner Stephen Kon and Mallesons chairman Stephen Minns becoming joint deputy chairs.

Financially independent

The merger will form one of four partnerships which are formed under KWM’s existing Swiss Verein which is an association of independent businesses.The moves expands the size of KWM by more than 42 per cent and gives the firm 12 new offices and 346 more lawyers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa with a total of 2700 lawyers, according to The Australian. Chinese law firm King & Wood originally mergered with Australian firm Mallesons in March 2012.
