ABA revisits non-lawyer owner debate

The American Bar Association is once more looking at whether it change the rules relating to non-lawyer owners and this time may see a different answer.

The organisation could be edging closer to proposing new regulations on what is still a controversial subject with three defense bar groups already opposing such a move. However the regulatory opportunities group on the Commission of the Future of Legal Services has called for comments after launching a report on developments since the last report in 2012. These include improving consumer choices and innovation, widening access to legal services and giving law firms more financial options. The ABA working group says alternative business structures are working outside the US and did not erode core values or harm clients. The deadline for comments is today, Friday 6 May.
