Attorney General moves to block Tony Blair war trial private prosecution

Attorney General MP Jeremy Wright has launched a legal fight to stop Tony Blair being charged over Iraq war deaths after former chief of staff of the Iraq army General Abdul-Wahid Shannan ar-Ribat tried to prosecute him for the crime of 'aggression'.

Last year District judge Michael Snow threw the bid out to prosecute Tony Blair declaring that he had ‘immunity’ from prosecution given any case would involve disclosing details under the Official Secrets Act. However, General ar-Ribat is now pushing for a judicial review of the judge’s decision and access to legal aid funding. This move has prompted Mr Wright to back the judge’s decision and ask to formally join future hearings to reject the proposal. The Attorney General said that any case was ‘hopeless’ as ‘aggression’ was not a crime in English law – a sentiment which the House of Lords agreed with.
