CIA lawyer warned colleagues of criminal liability over torture

An associate lawyer at the CIA wrote to colleagues warning them that criminal sanctions could follow the use of torture on detainees.

He wrote: 'We open ourselves up to possible criminal liability if we misuse the interrogation techniques'. The advice was given in relation to the interrogation of Janat Gul, a detainee thought to be linked to Al Qaeda. He urges that physical interrogation techniques are no longer used because 'if they don't work, then our motives are quesionable. If our motives might be questioned, then we get ourselves in trouble.'
