City firms view SRA training proposals with suspicion

In a report by the Law Society, City firms warn that proposals to change legal training by the Solicitors Regulation Authority are potentially dangerous to the UK law industry's global reputation.

The options are making no changes whatsoever to replacing the current qualifications process entirely. Respondents pointed to the training contract as being an integral part of ensuring that UK lawyers are of a high standard and that some overseas offices send their recruits to their London office to participate in the training contract because of its quality. Law Society president Jonathan Smithers warned deep changes could damage the perception of the UK as a centre of legal excellence. Source: The Lawyer
