Powers by the UK tax authorities to raid tax payer bank accounts have been called 'dangerous' and 'draconian' by the City of London Law Society. The comments come as part of a response to a government consultation on draft rules to reclaim tax from those owing more than £1000 in unpaid tax and announced in the 2014 budget. The CLLS said that the proposals represented a dangerous precedent regarding the balance of power between the HMRC and taxpayers. It was also concerned that it was HMRC and not the judiciary which would make the decision whilst there was also great potential for mistakes.
