Corbyn names new shadow lord chancellor

After a mass exodus in his shadow cabinet, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has picked a close ally and former employment lawyer to take up the role of shadow lord chancellor and secretary of state for justice.

Labour confirmed today that Richard Burgon, MP for Leeds East, will be stepping up to take over from former shadow lord chancellor and secretary of state for justice Lord Falconer following the latter’s resignation from Mr Corbyn’s cabinet. Lord Falconer announced his exit this week alongside shadow attorney general Karl Turner and 12 other members of the shadow cabinet after the UK’s historic vote to leave the EU last Thursday, which some in Labour believe Mr Corbyn failed to prevent. By contrast, Mr Burgon has a long history of loyalty to Mr Corbyn’s leadership and was one of the MPs who first nominated him to the helm of the party. Previously a shadow City minister, 35-year-old Mr Burgon enjoyed a career representing trade union members as an employment solicitor at Thompsons before embarking on a career in government.
