As part of its efforts, the FCC plans to pair and auction 1755-1780 MHz with 2155-2180 MHz, known as AWS-3.  The 1755-1780 MHz band, currently used by Federal and State governments, will be reallocated for wireless broadband operations as incumbent government users move to different spectrum.  This auction, one of several scheduled to occur before a statutory deadline of February 2015, is intended to fund the interoperable first responders network known as FirstNet.  According to Christiaan Segura, associate at Keller and Heckman LLP, 'this band, potentially globally harmonized, is one of the first steps to open up 500 MHz of spectrum, and with it opportunities for many companies looking for wireless spectrum.'
