Ferragamo stamps on the shoe copycats

Salvatore Ferragamo has taken the unusual step of going public on the scale of counterfeiting against its brand.

Ferragamo has launched an anti-counterfeiting initiative August_0802

The fashion house has revealed that it blocked the sale of around 90,000 products in online auctions, and seized a further 10,000 items last year.Together with a further 1,500 counterfeit products which were seized by Chinese authorities at its borders, the value of the goods is more than $7 million. In a bid to stem the counterfeiting the brand has focused preventative measures on China and the internet, and chairman Ferruccio Ferragamo told the FT that it had cancelled more than 350 domain names and illegal websites in 2014.

China initiative

Its efforts were strengthened in China by a successful appeal against a high end hotel selling counterfeit items, and by targeting trade fairs and resellers.  In addition, local and international legislators were doing more 'to defend the right of those suffering the effects of piracy and fakes,' Ferragamo said. The most frequently copied items were men’s belts, followed by handbags, and then both mens’ and womens’ shoes.
