Hong Kong Law Soc President stands down

Ambrose Lam has bowed to pressure and stood down as Hong Kong Law Society president, after losing a vote of confidence.

He said: ‘In order to maintain the solidarity of the Hong Kong Law Society, I will tender my resignation to the council with immediate effect.’ Mr Lam’s position had become problematic after he supported a proposal from Beijing which forecast major changes in the island’s legal system and, for instance, referred to judges as ‘administrators’. Many were still surprised by his losing the confidence vote last week as they had expected some of the large law firms in mainland China to be able to exert enough pressure on colleagues in Hong Kong to keep Mr Lam in place.
