Kirkland & Ellis is representing Facebook against two lawsuits on behalf of around 20,000 victims of terrorism attacks and their families, which each accuse Facebook of not doing enough to block-off communications between would-be terrorists and established terrorism cells. Judge Garaufis’ reprimand of Kirkland & Ellis came as he accused Facebook of not respecting the severity of the allegations against the company.

‘Insulting’

‘You tell your folks back at Kirkland & Ellis that I don’t much like the idea that they think so little of this court that they didn’t sent a partner here to talk about this kind of problem,’ he told the first-year associate sent by the firm. ‘Don’t say anything else. I think it’s outrageous, irresponsible and insulting, and you’re not the person doing the insulting. It’s whoever sent you here.’ Kirkland & Ellis has declined to comment publicly on the incident.
