Lawyers expect uptick in Scottish legal work after No vote

Lawyers might have received more work if last week's independence vote had gone the other way - but they still expect an increase after the Scots voted to stay in the UK.

Edinburgh-based Rod Macleod of Tods Murray told the Financial Times that  ‘two or three deals’ landed on his desk the day after the vote. He added: ‘It would have been an interesting theoretical legal exercise had there been a Yes vote – and we likely would have got more fees – but there’s still much to be done.’ He expects to see some big businesses, including the banks, to consider moving south - following the example of some Quebec businesses which relocated head offices to Toronto despite the vote to stay a part of Canada two decades ago.

Uncertainty

Tony Williams of legal market consultancy Jomati said: ‘Lawyers often win out through uncertainty as they have to help guide their clients through it.’ Source: Financial Times
