Lawyers warned on ethics over inaccurate LinkedIn endorsements

Lawyers who are receiving endorsements in areas where they have no experience should be monitoring them for accuracy and even culling them, according to an opinion by the New York County Lawyers Association.

The professional ethics committee of the Association says in an opinion this month that inaccurate endorsements and recommendations should be edited out. For example, a family lawyer who has no experience of international transactions might need to cut out endorsements in the latter area.

The opinion gives views on other aspects of LinkedIn profiles. It says, for instance, that some parts of profiles might need to be labelled as advertising. These might included subjective testimonials from clients or comments from colleagues. Source: ABA
