Mexico anti-trust bill could punish successful firms

Opposition is mounting towards the anti-trust bill which the Mexican Congress debates this week - as legal experts fear it could reduce competition and punish innovative companies.

Although Mexico has gained a business-friendly reputation, this bill is seen as introducing vague rules on ‘barriers to competition’ which could increase legal uncertainty for businesses and, therefore, reduce their willingness to invest. David Hurtado, partner in law firm Jauregi, Navarrete y Del Valle, said he was worried that organisations could be punished ‘for being successful’. He said: ‘Clearly, this [bill] demonstrates that we are returning to a state that wants to show that it wields power or has the tools to do so.’ Source: Financial Times
