Modest pay rises satisfy majority of Australian lawyers

Australian lawyers in private practice saw an average increase of 3% in pay this year, with 60% of them expressing satisfaction at this outcome, according to the Jacinta Fish Legal Salary Survey.

Some 40% of lawyers say they are satisfied with the outcome and 20% says they are somewhat satisfied. By contrast, 25% are dissatisfied. Morale is improving among lawyers in larger firms but is more problematic in the medium-tier practices, according to Jacinta Fish who said: 'These [mid-tier] firms are less exposed to global economic growth and fewer large transactions.'

Melbourne pay

A Melbourne salaried partner in a large firm is likely to be earning between A$300,000 and $450,000. A peer in a mid-tier firm in Melbourne (as pictured) would have earnings nearer to $250,000. Looking at job security issues, 71% say they feel secure in their present organisation and 17% say they are 'not at all secure'. Source: Lawyers Weekly
