Questions over dumbing down of profession as Bar results fall again

The results for the US's July bar exams are the lowest in 25 years, igniting the debate once again of whether the profession is losing some of its brighter candidates and dumbing down.

The mean score in July is said to be 139.9, down on the 141.5 mean in July 2014 and down again on the 144.3 mean registered in July 2013. There have been claims that law schools are lowering their admission standards as a way of recruiting candidates. Some of the more able students are said to be put off entering the profession by the difficult prospects for many law graduates.

Ability

Professor Derek Muller of the Pepperdine University School of Law said: 'You can only train students so far and so much, a lot depends on ability.' But others have taken the view that some of the exam papers were harder this year. Source: ABA
