Rainmakers seek the rewards of power as they get older

While young high-flyers might be concentrating in particular upon financial rewards, more mature rainmakers are likely to enjoy exercising power and other emotional and less tangible benefits, according to a Harvard Law School scholar.

Sources of satisfaction for high-flyers are often the result of collaboration Andrey_Popov

Heidi Gardner, a distinguished scholar of the Harvard Law School Center on the Legal Profession, is looking at the benefits that high-flyers can make by collaboration. Writing in Bloomberg Business of Law, she highlights intrinsic motivation, power, issue spotting and leaving a legacy as other ways that this group of lawyers find satisfaction.

Teams of hundreds of lawyers

Relating to the satisfying effect of using power, she describes how a CEO might call upon a legal adviser in a crisis - something which can be 'a heady experience for the lawyer'. This might mean running a team of hundreds of lawyers to sort out the crisis or advising the business elite of the world. Ms Gardner says that: 'all are sources of heightened power and prestige, and they are likely the result of a collaborative effort'. 'Source: Bloomberg Business of Law
