Robert Durst goes to Enron chief's defence lawyer over murder warrant

Robert Durst, the 71-year old American from the billionaire property family, is using the same Houston criminal lawyer who defended Keith Lay, the CEO and chair of Enron when it went bankrupt in 2001.

Chip Lewis describes himself on his site as offering ‘aggressive criminal defense’. When he saw The Jinx, the TV programme in which his client appeared to confess to murder without realising he was being filmed, the former prosecutor gave a surprising response. Mr Durst, still microphoned while talking to himself in a visit to the bathroom, said: ‘There it is. You're caught...What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.’ When interviewed on TV, Mr Lewis said: ‘My overarching thoughts are I was a bit underwhelmed, given the lead up and the build up to this new development.’

In the courtroom

Asked to explain Mr Durst’s comments - which could be seen as admitting to the murder of his wife and two other people in - Mr Lewis said to his interviewer, a former District Attorney: ‘Honestly, you and I are very, let’s say, flamboyant people who speak our minds often. Your honesty would lead you to say things under your breath you probably didn’t mean . . . L.A. County’s got the case. We’ll address those facts in the courtroom.’

Disappearance and two murders

Mr Durst's wife disappeared in 1982. Her best friend was murdered, execution-style, in 2000. Robert Durst was arrested after the body parts of a neighbour were found floating in Galveston Bay. Mr Durst went on trial for the murder of the neighbour but was acquitted. The documentary, The Jinx, gave circumstantial evidence linking Mr Durst to the murder of his wife's best friend. Mr Durst was interviewed in the docmentary, during which he made his visit to the bathroom still wearing the microphone. Sources: Chip Lewis Law and Vanity Fair
