T Edward Page, an attorney at Thiros & Thiros in Merrillville in Indiana, was shot and killed outside of his home the day after filing his retirement paperwork. Judge Page worked as a public defender for the last 10 years and was a former magistrate in Lake Superior Court.

Police say the suspect in custody is an 83-year-old man who is a ‘longtime friend and client.’ The suspect was at Judge Page’s house to pick up documents, though investigators declined to provide an motive in a ‘fluid’ investigation. Lt. James Gonzales, a police spokesperson, said the suspect was a current client of the victim’s in a civil matter. The suspect’s two daughters were at the scene of homicide at the time of the incident, and they were interviewed and released by police. Also present at the scene was Judge Page’s husband, who police say ‘tackled and disarmed, the suspect. Mr Gonzales said at a news conference ‘Judge Page was a well-respected judge, attorney and resident of Hobart, and he will be sorely missed by all,’ and ‘he was going to work through the last day of this month and then spend his time teaching and as a senior judge.’ Lake County Bar Association President Steven Sersic said ‘our community is shocked and saddened at Ted’s tragic passing.’

Shapiro killing

Last week in Chicago, prominent Mayer Brown partner Stephen Shapiro, the founder of the law firm’s Supreme Court and appellate practice, was hot and killed. Mr Shapiro's brother-in-law John Gately III has been charged Wednesday with first-degree murder and attempted murder. Prosecutors allege Mr Gately shot and killed Mr Shapiro at his suburban home in Northfield, Illinois, and accuse him of trying to kill his sister, Joan Gately Shapiro, who married Stephen Shapiro in 1982. According to various news outlets, authorities said Mrs Shapiro had been paying Gately’s rent and paying living expenses, but they had quarreled over his handling of the money. Mr Gately will plead not guilty, according to his lawyer, Michael Petro. Mr Petro told media that said Mr Gately loved the Shapiros and he was surprised to learn that Stephen Shapiro had died.
