Bristol teenager Fahma Mohamed is set to become one of the youngest doctorate holders in the history of the UK.

The 19-year-old Ms Fahma will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Bristol this Friday in recognition of her ongoing work to end the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). Ms Mohamed has been tirelessly campaigning against FGM since the age of 14 in various capacities, including appearing as the face of an anti-FGM campaign sponsored by The Guardian and performing the lead role in a play about FGM and domestic violence attended by UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon. Ms Mohamed will receive her doctorate before ever having attended university – she’s currently on a gap year before starting an undergraduate degree in biomedical science at Kings College London. ‘It can be quite overwhelming, but I’m really looking forward to it,’ said Ms Mohamed of her upcoming award.
