Eversheds Sutherland has opened a San Diego office with the addition of three leading Intellectual Property (IP) litigators: Nicola Pisano, Jose Patino and Christopher Bolten, who will join the Firm as partners in the next few weeks. Eversheds says the new office space can accommodate the firm’s anticipated growth, which is expected both in San Diego and in California generally.

IP growth

The firm says the group brings highly sophisticated and established multinational practices focused on IP patent litigation, patent prosecution and IP due diligence. The additions of Mr Pisano, Mr Patino and Mr Bolten in San Diego is the latest step in Eversheds Sutherland’s strategic plan to globally expand the intellectual property practice group. This past year, the IP team has grown by 12% with the addition of experienced attorneys in key jurisdictions throughout the world. “We are thrilled to welcome Nick, Joe and Chris to our team,” said Mark D Wasserman, co-ceo of Eversheds Sutherland. “Intellectual property protection and defense is an ever-growing concern for our clients around the globe. With the addition of this strong group, we are uniquely positioned to meet the changing needs of our clients with an agile, full-service suite of IP offerings throughout the world.” Eversheds Sutherland boasts a worldwide IP reach, and says the addition of this IP patent litigation and prosecution team further separates the Firm from most, if not all, global law firms that traditionally have larger trademark than patent service offerings. “Deepening and broadening the geographic presence of our patent litigation team is key to growing our already extensive global IP practice,” said partner Pete G Pappas, co-head of global intellectual property.

Industry hub

Mr Pappas says, “Now that we are physically located in one of the world’s premier life sciences and biotech industry hubs and have the combined experience of these terrific attorneys, we are moving closer to our goal of having the strongest, most fully capable IP team on the globe.” Having just opened a Chicago office in May, San Diego marks the second new US office for Eversheds Sutherland in 2019 bringing the Firm’s total offices to 69 (8 in the US) in 34 jurisdictions. These offices, in combination with Eversheds Sutherland’s unparalleled managed network of relationship firms, give Eversheds Sutherland reach, including IP, into more than 200 jurisdictions worldwide. The Firm has had an office in Sacramento since 2011. We have been looking to expand on the West Coast for a long time but were waiting for the right opportunity,” said Mr. Wasserman. “Nearly all of our clients, both in the US and internationally, have interests in the region. Strengthening our presence in the California is in line with our focus on growing strategically to meet client needs. We could not be more excited to have this talented IP team join our Firm.”
