Lawyer Paul Goodson offered to pay US$300 to the hackers but the ransom deadline had been exceeded by the time the offer was communicated. Mr Goodson explained how the virus took hold. He said: 'It was actually an email that looked like it was coming from our phone system because our system sends voice mail messages as an attachment.' The local police do not encourage people to pay ransoms but say that they know of 30 cases where money was handed over and the files were released. They recommend taking regular back-ups.
