Pharma dominates this week's round up of appointments, including a GC turned CEO.

David Taylor, the Theranos general counsel, has become the troubled company's new CEO. He replaces former CEO Elizabeth Holmes at a company that has had a run of legal troubles and bad headlines. The Palo Alto, California-based company rose to fame in 2004 for its allegedly revolutionary blood-testing technology, but crashed a decade later when The Wall Street Journal reported the tests didn’t work.

Waltham, Massachusetts-based Eloxx Pharmaceuticals, a growth biopharma company, has hired Neil Belloff as their new general counsel. Coming from a corporate law background, Mr Belloff is appointed executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. He joins from biopharma giant Celgene Corp, and before that had extensive experience in corporate law. The biopharma company develops therapies to treat cystic fibrosis.

Biotech company Celgene Corporation appointed Jonathan Biller as Executive Vice President and General Counsel effective July 3, 2018. He will be responsible for global legal strategy and will serve on the company's Executive Committee. Mr Biller succeeds Gerald F. Masoudi, Celgene's Executive Vice President and General Counsel since 2015. He joined Celgene in 2011 and was most recently Senior Vice President, Tax and Treasury and served as Celgene’s Treasurer. Mr Masoudi is leaving Celgene to return to Washington, D.C. with his family and assume the role of Chief Legal Officer with a private company outside of the biopharmaceutical industry.

Albireo Pharma, a clinical-stage orphan pediatric liver disease company developing bile acid modulators, has appointed Jason G. Duncan as General Counsel and Secretary. He will be responsible for Albireo’s global legal affairs, and serve as a strategic advisor to the executive team and board of directors. Mr Duncan joins Albireo with more than 15 years of legal and compliance experience in the pharmaceutical industry, most recently as General Counsel at Stallergenes Greer, where he oversaw all legal activities for the allergy immunotherapy company’s Americas business.

CytomX Therapeutics, a clinical-stage oncology-focused biopharmaceutical company pioneering investigational antibody therapeutics, has appointed Lloyd A. Rowland Jr as senior vice president, general counsel. Mr Rowland brings to CytomX 25 years of biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry legal counsel and transactional experience. Most recently, Mr. Rowland held the position of senior vice president, general counsel and chief compliance officer of Xencor, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing engineered monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, asthma and allergic diseases and cancer.

Singapore-headquartered video streaming service Hooq, a joint venture across South East Asia and India between Sony Pictures Entertainment, WarnerMedia and Singtel, has appointed Andrew Marshall to lead its legal team. Mr Marshall will be based at the HOOQ company headquarters in Singapore. He brings with him 20 years of legal, regulatory, and public policy experience, having worked with leading media, entertainment and communications companies, including ESPN STAR Sports and The Walt Disney Company among others.

JLL, the real estate investment company, has appointed Alan Tse as Global General Counsel and Corporate Secretary effective June 27. Mr Tse has extensive experience in companies with global operations, and will be responsible for JLL's legal and compliance functions. He succeeds Mark Ohringer, who is retiring from JLL, and will be located in the company's Chicago office.  Mr Tse is currently general counsel, corporate secretary and an executive committee member at Petco, a San Diego-based retailer, having previously served as general counsel at Churchill Downs and LG Electronics Mobilecomm. Mr Ohringer’s 15-year tenure at JLL earned a number of accolades, including being named Best In-House Legal Department in the Real Estate Sector by The Legal 500 in 2015, and one of the Top Innovators in the Legal Profession by Inside Counsel in 2014.

Adobe has tapped intellectual property leader Dana Rao to be the company's top legal chief. He has been associate general counsel of intellectual property and litigation since April 2012 at Adobe, the San Jose, California-based software company. Mr Rao succeeds Mike Dillon, over four months after the Adobe general counsel announced his retirement, has found a new legal leader—and they didn’t have to look far.
