This week sees National Enquirer owner hiring a former SEC Lawyer as its general counsel, while alcohol e-commerce site appoints a former state authority counsel.

Hedge fund sponsor Chatham Asset Management, majority owner of the scandal-embroiled National Enquirer tabloid, has hired New York-based McGuireWoods partner Daniel Goldfried to be its general counsel. Mr Goldfried is a former served senior counsel for the US Securities and Exchange Commission and spent a decade as an in-house lawyer in the finance industry. He joined McGuireWoods in 2017 as a partner in the firm’s government and white-collar investigations and broker-dealer practice groups. Mr Goldfried spent a decade as an in-house lawyer in the financial industry, first with Merrill Lynch and later with Bank of America following their 2008 merger.

Alcohol e-commerce site Drizly has appointed Jacqueline P Flug as vice president of legal, regulatory and industry affairs. She is a former general counsel to the New York State Liquor Authority. Ms Flug will work with Nidhi Kumar, Drizly’s general counsel and senior vice president for industry affairs on compliance and legislative issues. In her previous role with the New York State Liquor Authority, Flug was responsible for overseeing the state’s task force on alcohol-related e-commerce.

Title Alliance, an ESOP company, has appointed Maria Deligiorgis as general counsel and compliance officer. Ms Deligiorgis has spent her entire career in the real estate and title insurance industries working with small and large companies. In her new role, she is responsible for all of the company’s legal and business elements in all operations.

The board of trustees at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University have voted unanimously to appoint Melissa Jackson Holloway as the university’s general counsel, effective May 20, 2019. Ms Holloway currently serves as deputy general counsel at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana where she provides a wide range of legal support services. She is also a past vice chair for the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) Committee on Membership and Membership Services, a member of NACUA’s Board Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusivity, and a member of the board of directors for YMCA of Greater Durham.

GCP Applied Technologies, a global provider of construction products technologies, has named James E Thompson as vice president, general counsel and secretary, effective April 8, 2019. Mr Thompson brings over 30 years of legal leadership experience to GCP. He will lead the company’s global legal team and oversee all aspects of legal strategy, corporate governance, compliance, commercial transactions, intellectual property, and government relations. He is currently senior vice president, general counsel and chief ethics and compliance officer at Avon Products, a global beauty products company.

Jeff A Taylor, the former deputy general counsel and chief compliance office of General Motors has joined Fox Corp as executive vice president and chief litigation counsel. Mr Taylor will report to chief legal and policy officer Viet D Dinh. He will oversee litigation, labor and employment, content protection and compliance for all of the company’s operations. The company sold its film and TV studios as well as assets like Star India, National Geographic and FX Networks to Disney in the $71.3 billion transaction that closed last week. Mr Taylor most recently served as deputy general counsel and chief compliance officer for General Motors, where he was responsible for the company’s ethics and compliance program.

Stergios ‘Terry’ Theologides has joined Fannie Mae as executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. Mr Theologides most recently served as CoreLogic Inc.’s senior vice president, general counsel and secretary. He has more than 20 years’ legal and business experience, and at CoreLogic he served as a member of the management committee, helped guide the company’s strategic and innovation initiatives.

Flynn Restaurant Group has announced the internal promotion of Jacqueline (Jaci) Lee to general counsel. In this role, Ms Lee will oversee a wide range of legal matters for over 1,200 restaurants nationwide. An accomplished trial lawyer that spent more than a decade litigating bet-the-company cases. Prior to joining Flynn Restaurant Group as associate general counsel in 2018, she was a partner at Jones Day in its Silicon Valley office.

Juliette Théry-Schultz has been appointed chief of the legal service at the Autorité de la concurrence, which just celebrated its ten-year anniversary as an independent administrative public authority ensuring proper function in the competition of markets. She was deputy general rapporteur at the Autorité, and will take up her position at the end of April. Ms Théry-Schultz succeeds Henri Génin, previously hearing advisor at the Autorité and then chief of the legal service for 5 years. He joins the Versailles Court of Appeal (Cour d’appel de Versailles) as general counsel.
