Inhouse lawyers experience a Wild West of metrics

Inhouse lawyers who are trying to compare the efficiency of legal teams are finding that they are in a 'Wild West' of different kinds of metrical comparison tools.

GCs are looking for standards in metrics to enable genuine comparisons JoemanjiArts

Ken Grady, CEO of SeyfarthLean Consulting, told attendees at a webinar this week that the use of metrics had changed since they first came in for this sector some 20 to 30 years ago. While they tend to be weighted heavily towards measuring costs, he added: 'Today we are a little bit in the Wild West of metrics'.

Lack of uniformity

Also addresssing the Viewabill webinar on Monday, Casey Flaherty, corporate counsel at Kia Motors, agreed, saying: 'I don't find any kind of uniformity'. There was no uniformity from one organisation to another and even within the same organisation, he added. The most common metrics are those which measure costs per project and those which measure efficiency - by looking, for example, at time taken. A lack of common standards means that it is difficult for GCs to make comparisons.
