Insurance company fires law firms after audit

An insurance company has fired three law firms and suspended nine others after a billing audit revealed discrepencies.

The Florida-based Citizens Property Insurance Corporation appointed an auditor to examine 12 months of legal billings. The audit revealed that a litany of dubious billing practices from double billing to bills for duplicating work, unnecessary work or work that was never performed. Other bills revealed fees charged for cases that were closed or settled or lawyers billing for their time using a more expensive lawyer's higher billing rate. One lawyer billed for over 18 hours a day for 101 days. The company's legal fees rocketed from $59.4 million in 2012 to $72.9 million in 2013. Source: WFLA
