New York Racing Association GC gets severance payoff

The New York Racing Association has found itself emboiled in an 'exotic' bet scenario which has seen the CEO and general counsel depart.

New York Racing Association has found itself under investigation Dennis W Donohue

The former general counsel of the New York Racing Association received a $140k payoff severance payment after filing a claim against the association following his dismissal over an ‘exotic’ bet scandal. Patrick Kehoe received the payout as did the CEO, Charles Hayward, who was awarded  $20k. The dismissal by the board came after the racing board said they ‘failed to perform their duties at a level required by the board.’

Inexcusable

The association was found to have taken $7.4 million improperly from bettors by paying out at 74 per cent of winnings instead of 75 per cent for 15 months which Mr Hayward described as ‘an error.’ However, the latest investigation by the state inspector general Catherine Leahy Scott said it was as a result of many people failing to perform their duties and, as well as Mr Hayward, laid the blame at the door of current and previous board members, consultants and state regulators for the mix-up which she described as an' inexcusable subversion of public trust.'
