The London law firm RPC has lost high-profile general counsel Bruce Macmillan from its business set up to assist GCs.
London: British partner places drying up

The head of RPC's Centre for Legal Leadership (CLL) has exited to become general counsel of law firm Irwin Mitchell. Bruce Macmillan founded the CLL, which was set up to provide services for corporate counsel including coaching and recruitment.  Mr Macmillan will serve as general counsel at Irwin Mitchell as well as sit on the firm's board and risk and audit committees. It is the second loss of a high profile general counsel by RPC in 18 months - Julia Chain also exited the firm to join e-discovery firm Millnet.

Fascinating role

Mr Macmillan is a former city lawyer with experience working for multinationals, start-ups, private equity turnarounds and the public sector.  He founded a law firm, MAC Law and, prior to that, was senior vice-president and senior commercial legal counsel at VISA Europe with earlier roles at the Legal Services Board, Dell and Cable & Wireless. Looking ahead to his time with Irwin Mitchell, he said: 'I’m delighted to be joining what I believe to be the most interesting firm in the current market and one which has real opportunities for further development. This is a fascinating role for me at a fascinating time for the business and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead.'

RPC departures

Julia Chain was head and founder of RPC Perform, which was set up two years ago to provide management advice to general counsel. Ms Chain left to join e-discovery company Millnett alongside former Royal Bank of Scotland consultant Varun Srikumar and former director of legal change at Barclays, Andrew Day.
