South Africa sets ten-year jail term for illegal drone flights

South Africa's new drone rules, which take effect today, enshrine far heavier potential prison sentences than other countries that have similar rules.

The South Africa Civil Aviation Authority - which enforces the rules - accepts that the rules were rushed out in order to meet 'a growing demand to regulate this sector'. In contrast, Japan is planning a one-year prison sentence for people who fly drones in residential areas and Singapore has introduced a five-year penalty for carrying dangerous materials.
