Amal Clooney attacks Canada for sheepish response over detention

UK barrister Amal Clooney has criticised Canada for issuing 'sheepish whimpers' rather than engaging in 'real advocacy' with Egypt over the detention of a Canadian citizen whose release has been promised by the Cairo government.

Mohamed Fahmy has spent over a year in prison after being arrested with two colleagues at news organisation Al Jazeera English. But when one of the colleagues, Australian Peter Greste, was released last month, Mr Fahmy was forced to stay on in the country - albeit on bail. Although Egypt has said that he would be deported, this has not yet happened. Ms Clooney, his lawyers, believes that Canada has been too supine in its response.

Woefully inadequate

A junior Canadian minister has issued a short statement on the continuing detention of Mr Fahmy in Egypt. Ms Clooney said: 'Such sheepish whimpers are woefully inadequate when it comes to enforcing an agreement reached with a sovereign state regarding a citizen’s release from detention. Canada should now begin real advocacy to ensure that Egypt honours its agreement to release Mr. Fahmy from Egypt.' Source: National Post
