Arbitration preferred to litigation for cross-border disputes

Some 90 per cent of respondents prefer arbitration, according to the Queen Mary University of London 2015 International Arbitration Survey.

When the annual survey started in 2006, some 73 per cent of respondents voted in favour of arbitration. London is the most favoured location (voted for by 47 per cent of respondents), followed by Paris (38 per cent). Singapore, coming third, and Hong Kong, fourth, are seen as the rising star locations. The survey is produced in collaboration with White & Case.

Micro-regulation

Professor Loukas Mistelis, director of Queen Mary's School of International Arbitration, said: 'While arbitration is the most preferred method of dispute resolution, this year’s research shows that the global arbitration community increasingly supports greater micro-regulation for many of the specific parties involved. At the same time the survey shows that respondents appreciate the arbitration laws and rules adopted over the last years hence considering further macro-regulation unnecessary.'
