Australian legal industry bosses set to challenge homeless crisis

Thousands of Australia's top legal, business, and community leaders will join the fight against homelessness by sleeping out in the elements next month.

Legal software and services provider GlobalX Legal Solutions is aiming to raise more than $20,000 for the multi-million dollar fundraising event. The company has challenged its clients, with CEO Peter Maloney vowing to personally match donations dollar-for-dollar to achieve the company’s target.

‘A step in the right direction’

Mr Maloney commented: ‘It has always been the Australian way to help out those in need, but with so many people sleeping on the streets each night, more needs to be done to address this issue. At the end of the day, we can’t hope to build our businesses without first building a better society, and the CEO Sleepout is a step in the right direction.’

Aim to raise $6 million

St Vincent de Paul Society’s national chief executive Dr John Falzon said the event aims to raise $6 million to provide support for more than 105,000 homeless people across Australia. ‘Australian business, government and charities must continue to work together to do all we can to reduce the number of people living in desperate situations,’ he said.

Clayton Utz chief executive partner Rob Cutler and deputy chief partner Kate Jordan continue the firm’s contribution to highlight the issue of homelessness: ‘Our participation in the CEO Sleepout builds upon … assistance we provide to support those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and the organisations that support them, through our Pro Bono practice, Community Connect program and the Clayton Utz Foundation,’ Mr Cutler commented.

Partaking CEOs

Among others registered to take part from the legal fraternity include Gadens CEO Grant Scott-Hayward, Holding Redlich CEO Clarence Kunnel, Hynes Legal CEO Ben Deverson, Minter Ellison Partner Chris Kinsella and Sparke Helmore Lawyers Partner David Reid.
