Bakers spots bright lights in Africa mining prospects

Investors have reasons to show some confidence in the infrastructure of the African mining sector because some states are developing a similarity of approach, according to Baker & McKenzie.

In its new Global Mining Guide, the firm reviews 28 mining jurisdictions on their legal regulations, developments and framework. Looking at South Africa, Egypt and Morocco, it concludes that they are carefully following each other's progress, thus creating a similarity of approach which should encourage some confidence in investors. Global head of mining John Mollard says: 'Different legal systems have different histories, values and ideologies and this is evident at the time when mining laws are designed and when administrative departments implement the black-letter law and policy affecting mining.'
