Israel's second largest lender, Bank Leumi, has become the latest bank to give notice of a settlement with regulators that looks likely to be much higher than previously expected.

In a statement to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, the bank said ‘there is a possibility that the final amount of the expense for ending the investigations with all the American authorities will be significantly higher than the amount included in the (previous quarterly) financial reports’. It has referred in the past to a settlement deal of US$254m with the US Justice Department over possible tax evasion by its US clients. But it is now also in contact with the Department of Financial Sevices in New York. A source familiar with the situation has suggested that the full and final bill could be in the region of $600m.
