Boutiques function as development lab for BigLaw

Large firms are watching and learning from the techniques of boutiques, including fixed fees, brand promotion, flexible working and innovation, according to Laura Vickers, principal of Nest Legal in Australia.

In an interview with Lawyers Weekly, Ms Vickers said that, while it is unlikely that BigLaw will completely overhaul its approach, the bigger firms are following events with interest in the innovating, smaller firms. The smaller firms tend to share particular approaches, such as promoting the brand rather than the individual and separating lawyers from selling, she added. They tend to rely heavily on innovation to allow them to compete and develop.

Change

Ms Vickers said: 'There has been a push in recent years [across the industry] to see that something has to change. And some of the more dramatic changes are coming from the NewLaw end of the market.' Source: Lawyers Weekly
