Chinese lawyer numbers grow by 20,000 a year

The total is expected to reach 300,000 by the end of 2015 - but the government says that present levels of professionalism are not high enough.

The numbers relate to licensed lawyers, and were divulged in a government statement yesterday. Lawyers were described as an important part of the economy and social development. They are also needed as regards the rule of law, according to the statement - and moves to support the rule of law provide lawyers with opportunities. 

Annual caseload

Lawyers deal with about a quarter of the 8.5m civil and commercial cases that are dealt with each year.
