Clients on warning as class action numbers double in Australia

An increasing number of litigation funders has made class actions easier to bring, according to research from King & Wood Mallesons, meaning that many more businesses could be vulnerable.

In 2014/15, there were 33 class action suits launched, nearly double the 17 of the year before, according to 'The Review: Class Actions in Australia 2014/15'. The majority of claims related to securities. Other common areas of action were consumer protection, investment and environmental concerns.

Risk management

King & Wood Mallesons partner and co-author of the report Peta Stevenson said: 'It's not the type of business that the company is in that might make them more susceptible; it's all about their approach to risk management within the company and the attractiveness of them as an entity for an action.'
