Foreign lawyers could risk liberty in China after mass arrest of local peers

A professor of Chinese law has warned that it is not just Chinese lawyers who could be at risk of arrest in the People's Republic - but also foreign lawyers working there.

TungCheung

Professor Bing Ling from the University of Sydney told Lawyers Weekly: 'Australian lawyers and law firms need to be vigilant and we need to be aware of the situation there.' He went on to say that the mass arrest of local Chinese lawyers in recent weeks has had a 'chilling effect' on all lawyers becuase 'things can go out of control in any dispute - so you never know.'

Silence

The professor added that he would not be surprised if foreign law firms became silenced in response to the arrests. It would not be wise for law firms to make public comments, he said, on concerns they might have with the Chinese authorities. Source: Lawyers Weekly
