Game over for Nintendo's 3D defence

Japanese gaming giant Nintendo has been found guilty of patent infringement and order to cough up $30 million in damages to a former Sony employee.

Big fine for the Big N

A federal jury in New York found that Nintendo infringed on an inventor’s 3D display technology patent with its handheld 3DS console, reports IGN.
The technology, which provides 3D images without the need for 3D glasses, was invented by former Sony employee Seijiro Tomita.

Continued sales

Mr Tomita launched legal action in 2011 and has now been awarded $30.2m.
Nintendo’s lawyer, Scott Lindvall of New York firm Kaye Scholer, had argued that the 3DS did not use key aspects of Tomita’s patent.
Following the judgment, Nintendo of America said that it was confident the result will be set aside, and that the veridct will ‘not impact Nintendo's continued sales in the United States of its highly acclaimed line of video game hardware, software and accessories, including the Nintendo 3DS’.
