Global big-ticket tech deals hit new record

A report from EY shows that big-ticket M&A deals in the global technology sector hit a new record in the second quarter of 2016.

With 28 deals at or above US$1 billion, the second quarter of 2016 blew past the prior record of 20 such deals set in the final quarter of 2015. Three deals rose above US$5 billion, including one megadeal over US$25 billion.

Deal volume up

The volume of all deals in the sector was up 4 per cent from the previous quarter and 2 per cent year-over-year with 1,039 deals. Their overall value reached US$127.2 billion, the third highest ever.

Record quarter for Chinese buyers

Chinese buyers recorded their highest-value tech quarter ever, with US$32.3 billion in disclosed-value deals. It brought their year-to-date total to US$47.4 billion, which already is 19 per cent ahead of their entire 2015 value of US$39.9 billion.
