Historic attitudes favouring globalisation are fundamentally changing....
Steve Warren, of Beverly Hills firm Hansen Jacobson Teller Hoberman Newman Warren Richman Rush & Kaller, was introduced by long-time clients Leonardo DiCaprio and Charlize Theron at the GLAAD Media Awards to receive the Stephen F Kolzak Award for battling homophobia.
'Bully'
After a few words of thanks, the lawyer launched a scathing attack on the country’s top court, and specifically 77-year-old Justice Antonin Scalia, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Mr Warren described Justice Scalia as ‘an old-fashioned bully’ who had made statements which compared ‘laws against homosexuality to laws against murder’, and equating bestiality with same-sex intimacy.
American values
Mr Warren asked the crowd of 5,000: ‘Has he forgotten that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are core American values?’
The lawyer also made comparisons between himself and Chief Justice John Roberts, who shared a similar background except that Mr Warren claimed ‘only one of us was subjected to the humiliation and degradation of being forced to appeal to a family court judge with the power to overturn that hate-filled judgment mandated by then-Governor Pete Wilson’.
Mr Warren was followed on stage by former President Bill Clinton – who was accepting the Advocate for Change award – who said he was ‘very impressed’ by the lawyer’s speech.
