Hong Kong moves towards LLP structures

International law firms may receive a warmer welcome in Hong Kong next year which is considering allowing lawyers to operate as Limited Liability Partnerships in 2014.

Hong Kong's Legislative Council is expected to approve international firms into LLP structure Norman Chan

The move would let the cross-border firms bring their Hong Kong branches into their standard LLP structure. Such a law is 'expected' to be approved by the Legislative Council within a year, following positive indications from Solicitor-General Frank Poon, says Legal Week. He is quoted as saying: 'In the course of the next 12 months [the Law Society] will go before Legco to explain the rules. I’m hoping [it will become law soon] because I can see that there is interest in this development.' Source: Legal Week
