HR manager jailed after stealing $400,000 from law firm

An HR manager from a New Zealand law firm has been sentenced to three years in jail for stealing approximately NZ$400,000 from the firm over a period of nine years.

Charmaine Herron falsified 148 payroll entries over nine years while in her HR role, paying NZ$400,969 into her account. Prior to a hearing on Wednesday (27 January), Ms Herron said she stole the money after being inundated with debt after a marriage breakup. However, Judge Alistair Garland told the court that Ms Herron’s crimes were premeditated and caused by ‘greed not need’.

Reparation

In addition to her jail term, Ms Herron was ordered to contribute NZ$50,000 towards the remaining reparation on gaining employment after her release. Judge Garland noted that any position taken would be one where she wasn’t handling money. Source: The Australasian Lawyer
