Jury clears Dewey execs on some charges but continues to deliberate

Three former senior executives of failed US firm Dewey & LeBoeuf have been cleared of some of the charges they faced, but the jury continues to consider others, including the most serious one of grand larceny.

The three men - former chairman Steven Davis, former executive director Stephen DiCarmine and former chief financial officer Joel Sanders - were cleared on various charges relating to falsifying records. The defendants did not give a visible response when they heard the verdict on these charges.

Unanimous verdict

They were accused of misstating the finances of the firm (which went into administration in 2012) to a number of lenders, in order to keep the 1,000-lawyer practice afloat. The judge in the New York court hearing the case, Robert Stolz, told the jury to continue considering their verdict on the other counts. He said: 'It is not uncommon for a jury to believe they will never be able to reach a unanimous verdict. But after further deliberations, most juries are able to reach a unanimous verdict.'
