The reasons for the secrecy surrounding the trial are subject to reporting restrictions. The jury was told that the student had taken an interest in Islamic State. Police had gained evidence about him by installing a listening device in his E-Class Mercedes. Mr Incedal gave evidence in his defence, speaking about his troubled childhood in the Elephant and Castle area of London and of being excluded from school.
