Law student cleared of terror charge in semi-secret Old Bailey trial

A 27-year old law and accountancy university student has been cleared of charges that he was plotting an Islamic State-style bomb or gun attack - but now faces sentencing in relation to a previous conviction of possessing a bomb-making manual.

Old Bailey

Erol Incedal, who has been studying at London South Bank Unversity, broke down after he was cleared on a majority verdict from the jury. Much of the four-week long trial had been heard in a locked courtroom. He will be sentenced next Wednesday in relation to the bomb-making manual.

The reasons for the secrecy surrounding the trial are subject to reporting restrictions. The jury was told that the student had taken an interest in Islamic State. Police had gained evidence about him by installing a listening device in his E-Class Mercedes. Mr Incedal gave evidence in his defence, speaking about his troubled childhood in the Elephant and Castle area of London and of being excluded from school. Many of the features of the case - such as the source for Mr Incedal's spending and high level lifestyle - are also subject to reporting restrictions. Source: The Guardian
