Lawyer confesses to stealing $2.6m from former employer

The 39-year old lawyer from New Jersey in the US is now receiving treatment for gambling addiction and has just admitted that he took the money from a home healthcare business he used to work for.

Matthew Neugeboren has pleaded guilty in a federal court to wire fraud and to filing a false tax return. He maintained a lawyer trust account through which he paid the expenses of his employer. According to prosecuttors, he would ask for more money than was needed to settle legitimate bills and would then use the excess for gambling. 

Repayment

Of the $2.6m, he repaid $1.2m before the investigation into him started. The remaining $1.4m is also to be repaid, according to his plea agreement. Sentencing is to take place on 3 September. Source: ABA
