Malta-based financial adviser becomes ABS

The Maitland Group, administrators of £200b of assets, has turned its UK legal arm into an Alternative Business Structure (ABS).

The business employs about 700 people spread across 12 countries. Steve Georgala, the lawyer who is its chief executive, said that an ABS would allow one management structure. He described the UK model as a 'ground-breaking in this area.' He concluded: 'I think that what is happening in the UK is going to make it difficult for other countries to resist, now that the ownership of law firms is no longer sacrosanct.'  Source: Legal Futures
