A team of six Freshfields litigators, led by counsel Maxim Kulkov, has quit the practice in order to set up a dispute resolution practice called Kulkov Kolotilov & Partners.

The second partner in the new firm is Oleg Kolotilov who was an associate in Freshfields. The new practice will have a focus which is slightly wider than a specialist dispute resolution unit might normally have: its scope will also include compliance, risk management and internal company investigations.

Growth in disputes

Mr Kulkov is offering clients cuts on fees in comparison with global firms. He says that Kulkov Kolotilov & Partners can undercut the international practices by 40 per cent. While some observers might wonder if the current political climate in Russia is unhelpful to business, Mr Kulkov has said that a growth in disputes related to the economic crisis makes it the right time to launch a start-up.
