The hydropower project would require five dams to be built, flooding about 15,000 acres of land.  Environmentalists are against the energy plan, and claim that it would destroy the natural beauty of Patagonia, one of Chile’s most picturesque regions.  There is a general feeling of opposition to the proposed dams among Chile citizens, but companies see it as a solution for Chile’s power needs.  Environment Minister Pablo Badenier said: ‘Within the legal period of 60 days, the Cabinet of Ministers will decide on the merits of the matters that have been challenged, in a comprehensive way and in accordance with the law.’  Source: BBC
